Nigerian’s Agriculture sector holds tremendous potentials to unlock the economy and transform labour market dynamics in the country. Despite an array of security challenges, disruptive climatic condition and infrastructure deficits, the agricultural sector remains the dominant sector of Nigeria’s economy, contributing an average of 24% to the country’s GDP in the past eight years (2013-2020) and providing a means of livelihood for over 70% of Nigerian households.
In spite of the devastating effects of the pandemic, in the third quarter of 2020, the agriculture sector’s contribution to real GDP (30.77%) grew higher than other leading non-oil sectors such as information and communication (13.47%) and manufacturing (8.93). Recent data from National Bureau of statistics (NBS) also indicates that the sector contribution 26.95% to overall GDP in real terms in Q4 2020, higher than the quarter of 2020(26.09% and 30.77%).
Through its growth trends, agriculture sector presents vast opportunity for revenue diversification, job creation and improved income gains especially for youth and women. Similarly, the growing trend of Nigerian Agribusiness and Humane startups leveraging innovation and technology to shape agriculture is further expanding these opportunities and creating new income prospects along the agriculture value chain.
The potential of the agriculture sector to drastically reduce poverty and the youth unemployment has accorded the sector a pivotal position in major national development plans aimed at significantly transforming the labour market dynamics in Nigeria. The country can take advantage of the growing youth bulge and the emerging ecosystem to boost productivity and enhance food security.
